Gospel, Mt 6:19-23
19 'Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy them and thieves can break in and steal.

20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them and thieves cannot break in and steal.

21 For wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be too.

22 'The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is clear, your whole body will be filled with light.

23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened, what darkness that will be!

Today after mass the priest asked us to meditate on the last words of the Gospel. A young woman asked if I could help her understand this last passage. Does anyone have some insights?

Thanks,
Lucyna

Hi Lucyna,

Probably too late to help your friend. But from my understanding of those verses, Jesus is using a quick parable using our bodily senses.

First, he is telling us where we should put our priorites if we would like to share in God's love in Heaven. This is putting our soul in order. He then compares this to our eyes. If our eyes are dark (i.e. we cannot see), this causes problems with our entire body. And if we do not have our priorities correct, then our entire soul is in jeapordy.

The final line is simply stating that haivng our soul dark would be a great travesty, indeed.

My two cents,
Glenn
