I agree, too, what you say, Joyful, regarding insurance, but will forever believe that it should continue to remain optional as the mandatory part would violate our constitutional rights. But there can be other choices, i.e., medical savings, etc., though insurance does seem like the best option, but when people have chosen other options, they shouldn't be fined for that.

But the thing I totally agree with is that we Catholics and other pro-lifers as well should not be forced to pay tax dollars that will be used towards abortions. It does violate our right to religious freedom.

Joyful,
I agree that it is foolish but that is what he wants to do even though I adviced him.
The other thing that goes on that most people do not know about is that when a person without insurance mentions that to doctors, they charge them less than the rest of us that have insurance. Also the hospitals are willing to take installments. So going bankrupt is a possibility but not probable since he can pay in installments. His business per se is not worth much (office and equipment) and my understanding is that no one can force you to sell the house if you are bankrupt. I have heard that if one declares bankruptcy that the house is off limits since the person and his family have to live somewhere.

Dear Carmelite,

Yes your brother could pay in installments, but it has to be a certain percentage of the total owed.

If it were true that those who have no health insurance are charged less than those who do, then no one would be paying for health insurance!

Unfortunately yes, if one declares bankruptcy all assets are frozen and taken are collateral, your house, your car, anything of value such as jewelry, art work, and yes even one's furniture (depending on it's value). Even if one's house was paid for the person declaring bankruptcy would have no choice but to sell it because, again, it is an asset that has a monetary value that can be used to repay creditors. The person and their family would simply have to live in an apartment. Sad, but true. That could be another reason there are so many homeless people.

Oh, and my friend that was in the hospital for a week and had no insurance, her stay in the hospital for that one week was $50,000, and she didn't even have an operation. Her husband's three month stay in the hospital is costing them, so far, over half a million dollars, half a million! and the bill is still growing and he
had insurance.

I just wanted to mention that.
